History and profile

Opened in 1937, Zhongshan was among the major general hospitals established and managed by Chinese medical professionals. Affiliated with Fudan University, it brings together patient care, medical education and research, treating both common conditions and complex disease.

Clinical strengths and departments

Cardiovascular, liver tumour, kidney and lung care are established areas of focus. Cardiology, cardiac surgery, liver surgery, gastroenterology and the endoscopy centre each contribute specialist expertise.

The hospital also provides general surgery, orthopaedics and other clinical services, supported by interventional medicine, anaesthesiology, imaging, ultrasound and laboratory medicine. This range of departments supports multidisciplinary assessment for conditions involving several organ systems or requiring both medical and surgical input.

Selected medical achievements

Liver cancer research: Led by Professor Zhou Jian, with guidance and participation from Academician Fan Jia, a programme in liquid biopsy, omics analysis and individualised treatment received the Second Prize of the 2020 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Digestive endoscopy: Professor Zhou Pinghong’s team developed and disseminated a system of minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for oesophageal disease. The work received the Second Prize of the 2019 National Science and Technology Progress Award, reflecting the hospital’s experience in minimally invasive digestive care.

Academicians and specialist expertise

Ge Junbo, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, specialises in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology. Fan Jia, also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, works in liver oncology and liver surgery.

Other representative specialists include Zhou Jian in liver tumour care and research, and Zhou Pinghong in digestive endoscopy and minimally invasive endoscopic treatment.

These profiles describe the hospital’s academic and clinical expertise. Specialist schedules, scope of care and the campus for a visit are determined by the hospital.
