History and profile

Founded in 1907 as Guangci Hospital, Ruijin is a Grade III Class A general teaching hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Its development over more than a century has brought together clinical care, education and translational research.

Facilities include the Shanghai national major science infrastructure for translational medicine and a national clinical research centre for metabolic diseases, connecting laboratory research and disease mechanisms with clinical questions.

Clinical strengths and departments

Haematology and endocrine and metabolic disease are signature fields at Ruijin. Clinical and research work includes leukaemia, lymphoma, diabetes and endocrine disorders.

The broader clinical service spans cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, nephrology, respiratory medicine and rheumatology, alongside general surgery, orthopaedics and burns care. Emergency medicine, critical care, anaesthesiology, imaging and laboratory services support comprehensive assessment and treatment of complex conditions.

Selected medical achievements

Ruijin’s haematology teams have made internationally influential contributions to acute promyelocytic leukaemia research. Wang Zhenyi, Chen Zhu, Chen Saijuan and colleagues advanced research on all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide and the development of combination treatment, contributing to progress in this specific form of leukaemia.

Often called the “Shanghai protocol”, this work illustrates how Ruijin connects molecular research with clinical care. It concerns a particular disease subtype and is not a universal treatment for all leukaemias.

Academicians and specialist expertise

Ruijin’s haematology tradition includes Wang Zhenyi and Chen Saijuan, members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Chen Zhu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Ning Guang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has a longstanding focus on endocrine and metabolic disease.

Other representative specialists include Li Junmin in haematology, Zhao Weili in lymphoma, and Wang Weiqing in endocrine and metabolic disease.

These profiles describe the hospital’s academic and clinical expertise. Specialist schedules, scope of care and the campus for a visit are determined by the hospital.
