History and profile

Established in 1907 as the Chinese Red Cross General Hospital and Medical School, Huashan was one of Shanghai’s early modern hospitals founded by Chinese medical professionals. It received Grade III Class A accreditation in 1992 and is affiliated with Fudan University, with a Red Cross designation.

Alongside care, teaching and research, it hosts national medical centres for neurological and infectious diseases, as well as a national clinical research centre for ageing-related disease.

Clinical strengths and departments

Neurosurgery, neurology, hand surgery, dermatology and infectious diseases are distinctive strengths. Rehabilitation and sports medicine complement neurological, orthopaedic and limb-function care.

Its wider services include endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology, orthopaedics and oncology, supported by imaging, laboratory medicine, pathology and anaesthesiology. Patients can begin by identifying the specialty most relevant to their condition; the hospital determines whether multidisciplinary consultation is needed.

Selected medical achievements

Huashan’s hand surgery team has conducted sustained research into restoring limb movement, developing contralateral cervical nerve transfer for upper-limb paralysis following central nervous system injury. Research was published in The New England Journal of Medicine, and the related programme was presented with a First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2024.

The work brings together hand surgery, neuroscience and rehabilitation. Suitability for a particular procedure requires assessment by the clinical team.

Academic legacy and specialist expertise

Academician Gu Yudong (1937–2025) was a foundational figure in Huashan’s hand surgery tradition, with lasting contributions to hand surgery and peripheral nerve repair. Zhou Liangfu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a leading figure in its neurosurgical tradition.

Representative specialists include Mao Ying in brain tumour and cerebrovascular care, and Xu Wendong in hand surgery, nerve repair and limb-function reconstruction.

These profiles describe the hospital’s academic and clinical expertise. Specialist schedules, scope of care and the campus for a visit are determined by the hospital.
